Running Tips

(via)

From my running training for my half marathon with my sisters, I have learned that rest and stretching are key parts to have a good 'running career.' On the days that me and my sisters did not run (i.e. Wednesday and Sunday), we would stretch, rest and recover.

Also, when me and my sisters went running, we would time ourselves and see how fast we ran our miles. Let me tell you, the first couple weeks of running, our miles were pretty long. About midway into our running training, we were at about 11 minute miles, but, by the the end, we were about 10 minutes. So something else I learned from running, is to keep your pace. Don't constantly slow down and speed up. It's not good for your body and it lowers your stamina and endurance.

If your just starting to run, I say take your time. If it takes you 14 minutes to run your first mile, that's fine, but make sure you have a steady pace. From learning early on in running to have a steady pace, me and my sisters were able to get through each race we did (5k, 10k, and half marathon), without stopping!! Let me say that again, WE DID NOT STOP! Sometimes I felt like I was going to die, but I never stopped running, and that has taught me a great amount of perseverance. Also, let me tell you, my sisters are great encouragers, so if we ever felt down, there was always someone to lift our spirits up and motivate us.

So, if you want to start running, but don't know what to do first, just try running a mile. After a week of running a mile, add another mile, and so on. Make sure to keep a steady pace and stay hydrated, and if you need encouragement, don't be afraid to invite a friend to run with you.

Hope this post encourages you to persevere, through not only running, but whatever is going on in your life!

  3. Came over from the Aloha Blog Hop....great advice! I am finally back up to 4 miles on my runs after a looooong time off.
I used to stop while running if I got tired (way back when I ran in high school). Well, I don't anymore. And it sure makes you proud, right!?
